THE opening stage of this weekend's Donegal International Rally is 14.3 kilometres long – it’s a pretty modest distance in comparison to the 540km trip up along the west coast that Dunmanway's Jason McSweeney will have travelled to get to the opening stage at Malin Head, and that's just for starters. McSweeney is the top seeded local driver participating in the three-day, 20-stage rally totalling 271.12 kilometres, for what is the fourth round of the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship.

TIMOLEAGUE’S Kevin O'Sullivan made his rallying debut at the recent Laois Heartland's Rally that was based in Stradbally. Driving the ODM Rally Team hired Opel Corsa GSi and co-driven by fellow local Mark Hurley, he finished eighth in Class 10. ‘From spectating at the West Cork Rally I have always wanted to compete,’ O'Sullivan explained. ‘It went well apart from issues with the brakes on the second stage where we had only got about a kilometre into the stage.

The curtain fell on last weekend’s celebrations of 200 years of the RNLI in the West Cork village with the ‘Courtmacsherry Rhythms’, a unique concert in the Sacred Heart Church in Courtmacsherry. The performance was a fitting and wonderful conclusion to the weekend’s festivities that were held to mark the 200th anniversary of the first lifeboat stationed in Courtmacsherry, The Plenty.

Now 200 years in operation, Courtmacsherry RNLI lifeboat volunteer crews have saved 251 lives. Generations of lifeboat volunteers that have protected so many over the past 200 years were honoured over the weekend in Courtmacsherry, with the unveiling of a special commemorative plaque that will serve as a lasting tribute and legacy to their decades of bravery and selflessness.

LAST Sunday's Skibbereen and District Car Club's first-ever Endurance Trial was won by the County Meath crew of Gerard and Luke O'Reilly (Nissan Micra), who finished just two seconds ahead of the Toyota Starlet of the Dublin/Monaghan pairing of Karl O'Donoghue/Evin Hughes. The Ovens/Donoughmore paring of Owen Murphy/Patrick O'Sullivan (Toyota Yaris) upheld local honour, finishing third overall, 43 seconds further behind.
