There were joyous scenes and great celebrations at Barryroe National School yesterday, with the announcement that a group of its third class pupils had scooped the 2025 STEPS Young Engineers Award, beating some six hundred other schools to take the prestigious accolade. Their prizewinning project was about saving lives at sea, coinciding nicely with the 200th anniversary of the first lifeboat in Courtmacsherry, which also falls this year.

BALLYLICKEY’S Robert Cronin secured his maiden victory in the Protyre Motorsport Ginetta Championship at Oulton Park on Saturday afternoon. Qualifying his Cronin Centra liveried Elite Motorsport Ginetta in P2, he moved into the lead on the run to Turn 1 ahead of E3 Sport polesitter Jack Collins. In wet conditions, it was an important move given that the wipers failed just before the race began and Cronin knew that anywhere else he would have to cope with the spray from the cars ahead.

AS the all-weather Courtmacsherry lifeboat the Val Adnams reflected in the morning sunshine last Saturday morning, The Southern Star met with the recently retired Mark Gannon on the pier, an appropriate location to recall his half century as a member of the local lifeboat. So much has changed since Mark joined the crew back in 1975, and he can easily remember his first call-out to a local fishing vessel that had gone on fire just outside the bay.

LOVE was certainly in the air in Courtmacsherry on the May bank holiday Monday where Carrigaline’s Shane Houston, a software designer, proposed to his girlfriend scientist, Aisling Murphy, who also hails from Carrigaline. Having met at a friend’s birthday party in Rochestown some ten years ago, love blossomed for the couple and it was very appropriate that they opted to choose Courtmacsherry to get engaged.

NEWCESTOWN co-driver Adrian Deasy and his Killarney driver Alan Ring took their Munster Joinery liveried BMW M3 E30 to a highly commendable sixth place finish in last weekend's Rallye d'Antibes Historic Rally, a counting round of the European Historic Rally Championship. They made a great start to the nine-stage event and finished Friday's three stages in eighth position, one minute and 45.1s behind rally leader Jari Matti Latvala.
