Train tracks link many of our nation's biggest cities, but don't overlook the smallest of route stops. They help break up a longer train trip or might be an ideal final destination. A few are perfect for an overnight or more. Why travel by train? Road trips provide magnificent scenery too but can be exhausting for the driver and confining for the passenger.

The Library of Congress says the first photo selfie was taken in 1839, when Robert Cornelius of Philadelphia tried to stand motionless in front of his camera for at least 10 minutes. That was 174 years before “selfie” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary as word of the year. Now selfie stations pop up everywhere, including national parks and landmarks. Add selfie museums, trails and guided tours (“Let’s Take a Selfie” is a three-hour Boston port excursion for Norwegian Cruise Line).

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, but the original St. Nicholas was very different from what we know today. His home was on the Mediterranean Sea, not the North Pole. More pious than jolly. When life feels too complicated, I can regain a sense of balance by driving to farmland where Amish families intentionally live quietly, simply and conservatively. Add "mysteriously," if you've had little exposure to their lifestyle. In their rural landscape are black, horse-drawn buggies instead of trucks and tractors. They are driven by men with straw hats, suspenders and beards. The women wear bonnets and modest, ankle-length dresses.
