    Looking the very same as it did when it was delivered in 1921, the restored locomotive formerly on display next to the Scotia Museum, made its public debut in Mill Valley over Memorial Day weekend. Locomotive No. 9 worked for the Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railroad in Mill Valley. It was known as the world’s crookedest railway, which ran from Mill Valley to the resort on top of Mt. Tamalpais.

    Four dozen Fortuna Union High School seniors were recognized recently at an awards ceremony for completing the Future Farmers of America (FFA) program. Several also received State degree recognitions as well as proficiency and other awards. The Outstanding Member award was presented to Robbie Shoemaker and Outstanding SAE award was presented to Dawson McWhorter. Leadership awards were presented to Logan Berti, Michael Hansen, and Zachary Trumbo.

    A Hydesville preschool class created American flag artwork, which is now on display at the Fortuna Veterans building. The artwork was put on display at the building on May 23, in conjunction with Memorial Day weekend. “This year, I really wanted the kids here at Sumer’s Silly Monkeys to learn what Memorial Day means,” teacher and owner Sumer Crenshaw said.

    With the sound of weed eaters and chainsaws echoing through Sunrise Cemetery in Fortuna on Saturday May 17, vegetation was cleared revealing some of the oldest graves at this location, including that of a Civil War veteran. Two crews from Cal Fire’s High Rock camp, worked all day clearing berry briars, grass and scotch broom; trimming branches from trees and restoring a number of graves by righting fallen and straightening tilted headstones.

    Stainbrook Handyman Service is now Stainbrook Construction, still based in Fortuna, and a ribbon-cutting was held recently in recognition of the name change. Members of the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce gathered, joining business owner Jared Stainbrook for the ribbon-cutting. “We’re still providing quality home maintenance and repairs as well as home improvements,” Stainbrook said. “There is no job too small,” he added.
