1. “Bookstories” by Sarah TollokSarah Tollok wrote the first draft of her story in 30 days. A cockroach scurries across the kitchen floor. I run quickly to turn on the light and find more critters as they escape into the darkness. Their creepy little legs move so fast as their brown bodies retreat to unknown hiding places. I look above and gaze at dead flies in the long light fixture cemented to the spackled ceiling. Living flies circle during the day just outside my beautiful picture window. They give me a sense of peace after sundown when they fly out the holes in the screens.

by Mary Higgins Clark & Alafair Burke ‧ How do you extend the oeuvre of a deceased author who mostly avoided continuing characters? Burke, who collaborated with Clark on several novels before her passing, comes up with a most ingenious way. In Where Are the Children? (1975), Clark’s very first novel, Melissa and Mike Eldredge were kidnapped by their mother's ex-husband.
