In March 1970, a pregnant woman filed a lawsuit against Henry Wade, the district attorney of Dallas County, Texas, challenging the state’s prohibition of abortion. Filing her suit under the pseudonym Jane Roe, the woman claimed the law violated her Constitutional right to privacy.  As the case made its way through the federal courts, individual states began repealing anti-abortion laws or expanding legal exceptions for abortion to include fetal abnormalities and cases of rape and incest.
