As Hilton Head Island temperatures swell into the high 80s and students return to school, nearly 50% of Hilton Head Island Elementary School classrooms have poorly functioning or no air conditioning, according to the school district’s Chief Operations Officer Robert Oetting. “(It’s) on the cusp of getting uncomfortable,” Oetting said. Depending on which of the school’s 30 affected classrooms, the air conditioning broke between one month ago and Aug. 14.

The South Beach Marina village, home to the iconic Salty Dog Café and one of the island’s most popular and active destinations, is planning major renovations that will reorganize shops and change its appearance, according to documents filed with the town of Hilton Head. While the restaurant is not part of the project and likely won’t be affected, the South Beach Inn, several shops and parking areas are all within the area of the project.

Beaufort County students start school Friday, which is two days later than scheduled due to Tropical Storm Debby. And when they return, they’ll start with a new rule: a policy barring cell phones from the classroom that teachers will enforce. Students, parents and teachers in the area haven’t navigated this rule before and the district’s one-page explanation of the policy left some questions unanswered.
