Austin’s got a new band in town, and they’ve hit the ground running so hard, I’m worried their legs might fly off. Variety is a project created by Rhys Woodruff, a Dallas native better known as the drummer from another Austin favorite, Borzoi. Variety is a mix of genres and emotion, that you do not know how you ever lived without. But Woodruff doesn’t just stick to drums. He’s been playing a variety of instruments since childhood—something that has shaped him both musically and personally.

The Austin septet just shared this 9/8 piece of jazz-funk-rock fusion ahead of their last show of the year tomorrow night at The Mohawk. Straight out of the 512, Austin-based funk-rock band Blue Tongue is back with a brand-new single! “Blisters” marks the first release from their highly anticipated album, set to drop on January 9th, 2025. After making fans wait since their last single in 2023, “Blisters” is here to prove that the wait was well worth it.

Austin-based indie-alt artist Katherion has brought yet another innovative single to the local music scene. “Mr. 9” was released last week, on December 12th, on every major streaming service. This will be Katherion’s second single for her debut album, coming after the first one, “Roses and Daisies,” which was released back in September 2023. “Mr.9” is a preview of her upcoming debut album, EROS, which will be released in 2025.

The School Board Referendum, the extra millage we pay on our property taxes to support our students and teachers, passed on Nov. 5 with 84.07% of the vote. A record number voted for this referendum – 214,656 people voted “yes.” This vote is symbolic of all that is good in this community and why many of us live and do business here.

As I announce my retirement from the Gulf Coast Builders Exchange (GCBX) after 16 years, I’m reminded of the lyric from a famous Frank Sinatra song, “And now, the end is near.” I won’t go into the next lyric, because I don’t think I’m facing the final curtain. I hope I have many years left to kick up my heels and watch the organization continue to grow and prosper under new leadership.
Yet, I hope GCBX never loses sight of what makes it such a special and unique organization.
