A new summer food program announced by the governor doesn’t sit well with the head of a Siouxland charity organization. In December, Governor Reynolds turned down about $29 million in federal funding for the Summer EBT program. Yesterday (Wednesday), she announced that $900,000 will be available in grants to schools and organizations to provide food and snacks during the summer.

Recently on The Exchange . . . We talked with Sioux City North High School Band Director Pat Toben and band members about how they balance band, academics and home life. Despite participating in multiple bands, many of the students are maintaining a high level of academic performance. We also talk with Pam Wurster of the Siouxland Connections Area Agency on Aging about how it works with Iowa Return to Community to keep older community members out of care homes after they leave the hospital.

The Sioux City Art Center has announced the return of artist Amanda Browder, the creator of Razzle Dazzle, a huge textile sculpture. It will be suspended from the Art Center’s buildings in August. She is holding Sewing Days, where volunteers sew and bring fabric for the project. Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett spoke with Amanda and some of her volunteers Tuesday at the Siouxland Center for Active Generations for this SPM News Extra.
