The Beechwood Shopping Center on Alps Road in Athens is gearing up for holiday celebrations and shopping. Beginning on Black Friday, residents will be able to meet Santa and enjoy sounds of the season with a jolly concert at the 2023 Beechwood Holiday Market. Everything will kick off on Nov. 24 with a tree lighting, featuring an over 40-foot evergreen topped with a sparkling star.

After almost 20 years without a Guthrie’s in Athens, there soon may be not one but two locations in the Classic City. According to an Oct. 26 plans review agenda from the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government, Guthrie’s is planning on constructing a new restaurant on Lexington Road. The restaurant will be an extension of the Marathon Gas convenience store at 1580 Lexington Rd. by B&B Theatres. Guthrie’s did not immediately respond when asked to confirm this new location.

After spending the past several months touring across the country with Morgan Wallen, Nashville-based country singer ERNEST is kicking off his second headlining tour, and this time around he’s coming to Athens. Promising nonstop country music, the “Flower Shops” singer-songwriter is scheduled to play Georgia Theatre on Nov. 16, with openers Jake Worthington and Cody Lohden.

For almost 40 years, 795 Baxter St. has been known as a spot for fast and classic fried chicken, yet Raising Cane’s did not arrive in Athens until 2006. Before Baxter Street was home to Cane’s and its ever-present drive-thru line, there was Guthrie’s, an Auburn-based chain serving up fried chicken, Texas toast, fries, and their signature sauce for dipping.
