John’s Island Community Service League members had a lot to celebrate at their Closing Luncheon at the John’s Island Club, most particularly the distribution of a whopping $2.18 million in grants and scholarships during its 2024-25 season. Distributions included $1.655 million in annual grants, $113,500 in strategic grants, $59,500 in prior year commitments, $250,000 to the United Way of Indian River County Hurricane Relief Fund and $102,000 in scholarships.

Artists and photography aficionados packed the A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery for the opening reception for the 30th annual Through the Eye of the Camera juried photography exhibition, which is on view through June 20. In his welcome address, Marshall Adams, executive director, pointed out that 30 years ago, photography was still “trying to get the popular buy-in as an art form at a museum.”They were fortunate that Janie and Mike Hinkle, then owners of a photography business, recognized its value.

The Windsor Polo Field once again took on the appearance of Camelot, with lines of flag-topped cabanas dotting the northern end of the field for the 34th annual May Pops Spring Concert to benefit the Cleveland Clinic Indian River Foundation. Sponsors and VIP guests enjoyed a catered pre-concert buffet while general admission concert-goers spread out on the south side of the lawn with their own picnic baskets.

Brian and Kim Robbins opened their lovely home to a private piano recital for top supporters of the Indian River Symphonic Association featuring a performance by Andrew Galuska. Now based in Sarasota, Galuska was the former director of Music and Fine Arts at the Community Church of Vero Beach. An award-winning musician, Galuska has an organ and choral repertoire that spans six centuries and, as a prolific composer, has premiered his works in this country and abroad.

The ever-stylish supporters of the Hibiscus Children’s Center ushered in springtime with the 26th annual Blue Ribbon Luncheon & Fashion Show at the Oak Harbor Club, featuring keynote speaker Gretchen Scott, founder and CEO of Gretchen Scott Designs. Scott, an accomplished businesswoman and philanthropist, had also met with supporters the evening before at an exclusive VIP Party at the River Club at Carlton. She was here at the invitation of Cathy Cronin, event co-chair with Diane Wilhelm.
