It’s a common challenge. Dog owners trying to capture and hold their dog’s undivided attention for more than a nanosecond. We’re not talking about disciplines such as obeying the five basics (sit, stay, heel, down, and leave it) where training and your dog’s safety may be involved. We’re talking about everyday stuff. Like directing him over to that errant treat he missed scooping up yesterday. Or, having him come over and sit beside you while you’re binge-watching your favorite series.

NEW! by Mary Simpson (IC: ) (photo credit: lucky_pics / shutterstock.com)Do you brush your cat? Let me rephrase that. Does your cat let you brush her? Because if she’s longer-haired she should be brushed daily – regardless of how annoyed she becomes with you. And for shorter-haired felines, at least once a week to keep both cat and home, reasonably free from flying fur.

My Schnoodle Ruby is relentless when positioning herself smack dab in front of my legs, yet facing away as if she’s ignoring my efforts to interact with or simply move past her. When seated, I’ve always assumed that this was her way of showing me she was “available” for a back rub or patting session should I be so inclined. When standing, I was certain that she was trying to guide me toward food or the treat drawer. Apparently, I have it all wrong. Or at least, partially wrong.

Anyone with a cat and a window knows what I’m talking about. That sudden fixation and soft, rapid-fire chatter your feline starts into when she spies something within her sightlines but alas, just out of reach. Also known as chittering or twittering, it’s a vocalization she emits while staring straight ahead and to be honest, it sounds like some voodoo chant wee Fluffy is using to conjure up spirits that she alone can see.

I was born and raised in Toronto and when people from small towns commented the city was too large and impersonal, I pointed out that what we had was communities who knew one another, knew the kids who lived down the block and shopped at the corner stores. They are the backbone.

I want Torontonians to be able to shop local, age at home, have places to meet up with friends and have fun & vibrant communities. Allowing small retail like convenience stores, cafes and grocers in neighborhoods would contribute to our quality of life. Let’s do it. https://t.co/2F4cjjbLHn
