The transport of a proton through hydrogen bonds plays a crucially important role in environments related to acid/base chemistry, biochemistry, and atmospheric chemistry. (1−5) Water ice has long been studied to understand the transfer of a proton through chains of hydrogen bonds. The unique electrochemical property of water ice, resembling a “p-type semiconductor”, has been characterized by the Grotthuss mechanism, (1,6) which demonstrates that excess protons are relayed along hydrogen bonds.
