    As Commonweal’s centennial year comes to a close, I’ve been thinking about how the magazine has played a part in my life. I have what I think is a unique perspective, given that I’m probably the only kid from the University of Bologna in Italy to grow up and come to identify with “Commonweal Catholicism.” In Italian Catholicism, the expression “lay theologian” was always an oxymoron. So one can understand why my parents were so nervous about my interest in theology and Church history.
