1 IntroductionNonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by hepatic steatosis without excessive alcohol use, and has become a major public health issue with the pandemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes worldwide (1). NAFLD represents a spectrum of progressive liver conditions, which can progress from simple steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, advanced fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even hepatocellular carcinoma (2).
