But none of that would have been possible if I hadn’t been bored and curious. And more to the point: curious about tech. The university computer lab may seem at first like an unlikely center for creativity. We tend to think of creativity as happening more in the artist’s studio or writers’ workshop. But throughout history, very often our greatest creative leaps—and I would argue that the web and its descendants represent one such leap—have been due to advances in technology.

Still, I’ll say something that may be a little contrarian here: I think Google’s control over Chrome and Android are more or less beneficial for consumers, or at least help provide a good experience. The data collection practices are horrendous and potentially dangerous. And yes, product “ecosystems” are most often swamps that are meant to make it hard to get out of any given system.

“Our goal is to make ChatGPT the smartest assistant, and now we’re really enhancing its capabilities in terms of what it has access to from the web,” Fry tells MIT Technology Review. The feature is available today for the chatbot’s paying users. While ChatGPT search, as it is known, is initially available to paying customers, OpenAI intends to make it available for free later, even when people are logged out.
