Nashville will have a new public charter school in the fall with a mission to prepare high school students for careers in nursing and allied health. The school’s executive director was the keynote speaker at the recent spring Nursing Grand Rounds at VUMC.

David Shaffer, MD, professor of Surgery and surgical director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program, will retire June 30. Shaffer came to the Vanderbilt Transplant Center in 2001 as chief of the Division of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation, a role in which he served until 2020, when he was succeeded by his mentee, Rachel Forbes, MD, MBA, associate professor of Surgery.

U.S. veterans with depression had a 14% higher risk of heart failure, a new Vanderbilt University Medical Center-led study found, even after adjusting for traditional risk factors. The study, “Depression and Heart Failure in U.S. Veterans,” was published May 8 in the journal JAMA Network Open. Corresponding author Evan Brittain, MD, MSCI, professor of Medicine, said the study suggests implications for patient care.

Seventy-one individuals donated their organs at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2024, and they and their families were saluted on April 30 at the annual Donate Life Ceremony. “Those 71 donors resulted in 235 lives that were saved,” said C. Wright Pinson, MBA, MD, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Health System Officer for VUMC.

Barton Huddleston, MD, assistant professor of Clinical, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, was recently appointed to the State Rehabilitation Council (SRC) for a three-year term by Gov. Bill Lee. The mission of the SRC is to advise, evaluate and partner with the public vocational rehabilitation program in support of improving access to employment statewide.
