A 5.5% pay rise for over a million NHS workers has been confirmed but how it will be funded is still unclear. The announcement was made by new Labour Chancellor Rachael Reeves earlier today alongside a £20 billion financial blackhole left by the previous Conservative government. It will be highest single-year pay rise in well over a decade but comes after a decade of real terms pay cuts for nursing staff.

The Chancellor has confirmed that a long-awaited pay rise for NHS workers in England is set to be announced within days. It comes after a report by the NHS Independent Pay Review Body (NHSPRB) was significantly delayed by late commissioning and subsequently the general election. According to the Times newspaper, the NHSPRB has told the government a 5.5% pay rise is recommended for around 1.3 million NHS staff. A figure significantly higher than the 3% the previous government had budgeted for.

In its submission to the NHS Pay Review Body (PRB), the organisation has warned that an unaffordable pay rise could lead to service cuts unless it is fully funded by the Government. A registered nurse and assistant practitioner have been jailed for drugging patients to “keep them quiet and compliant”. Registered nurse Catherine Hudson has been jailed for seven years while assistant practitioner Charlotte Wilmot was sentenced for just three years. The pair drugged two patients for an “easy life” during work shifts at Blackpool Victoria Hospital between April 2017 and November 2018.
