I am thrilled that in the new year honours list I am being made an MBE. I know some people disapprove of the honours system and others will be outraged that I am accepting an award in the name of the British empire. But I welcome the opportunities I’m hoping the award will bring. I am being honoured as a writer and broadcaster for services to LGBTQ+ culture, but when I was growing up in the 1980s there was hardly any queer culture, and what we had was pretty much underground and undiscussed.

I appreciate listening to their insights on challenges that I might be facing for the first time but that they have encountered before and can see from a more long-term perspective. Hopefully, I also give them a unique take on subjects that friends of their own age might approach in a different way. Stories about intergenerational friendships, too, have plenty of wisdom for readers to gain.

I am proud to say that my latest novel, One Love, is my queer-est yet. And it includes my first-ever gay sex scene—the first gay sex scene a publisher has let me write. But I had to overcome a nervousness that still exists in the industry about representing authentic queer experiences in commercial fiction. I believe we need to get over this and stop trying to sanitise queer fiction in an attempt to appeal to the mainstream.
