    Payton Dunbar and Alyssa Ervin, two former high school basketball players from the Timesland area, are transferring colleges following their freshman seasons. Dunbar, a 5-foot-11 guard, announced Wednesday she is transferring from Virginia to Providence with three years of eligibility remaining. The Narrows native and Jefferson Christian graduate played in 15 games for the Cavaliers this past season with one start, averaging just over eight minutes on the floor.

    RICHMOND — Lord Botetourt’s unit of only eight varsity players seemed to have caught up to it in the girls Class 3 state championship Saturday. The Cavaliers, who had persevered all season through injuries and a short bench to get to the title game, looked overpowered by a James Monroe squad that had to taste defeat all year, and fell into a 13-point hole in the second quarter. Head coach Renee Favaro remained confident, telling her team to stick with it.
