1 Introduction Globally, freshwater ecosystems are threatened by urbanisation and climate change. Urbanisation causes land degradation, air and water pollution and biodiversity declines (Cresswell and Murphy 2017; Ferreira, Walsh, and Ferreira 2018; Olsson et al. 2019), while climate change influences the hydrologic cycle and water availability in freshwater ecosystems (Argent 2017; Konapala et al. 2020).
