I’m many hundreds of dollars poorer in the upper bowl of Madison Square Garden in a seething mass of orange and blue, watching the Knicks — A team I have supported for many years, and which has given me little in return —play the Indiana Pacers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals.

    The Democratic primary is on June 24th, and a way too long list of characters is hoping to be on your ballot (which, as a reminder, is ranked choice, meaning you get to vote for multiple candidates in your order of preference). To state the obvious, if you live somewhere other than NYC, by all means, save yourself and come back next week when we’re back to talking about nice parks and inane urban observations. Rather than subject you to weeks of local politics, I made one giant newsletter.

    Lyndon Johnson once said, “When the burdens of the presidency seem unusually heavy, I always remind myself it could be worse. I could be a Mayor.” Mayors occupy a frustrating middle ground— in some ways more powerful than national politicians with direct influence on the lives of their constituents, but also beholden to the whims and budgets of State and Federal leaders.

As I lined up outside their 55th Street studio, I watched a rehearsal through a row of windows on the ground floor, which you can see in the picture below.

After 9 hours tippity-tapping on a computer in my little cubicle, the urge not only to move but to get outside a screen is strong. I left work yesterday and had to be at a bar just off the West Side Highway in an hour. The sun was out, so I walked. Every morning and evening a vignette of pure Gotham greets me outside work.
