Last year Google announced that it was significantly behind on a pledge to become carbon neutral by 2030. “Its emissions are actually up nearly 50 percent since 2019—one factor: artificial intelligence [AI] and the energy required to power it via the company’s massive data centers,” PBS NewsHour anchor Amna Nawaz explained during a recent network segment on AI and energy.

Last November, Apple’s new Apple Intelligence feature notified many iPhone users that the New York Times had reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested. In December, the BBC lodged a complaint with the company after Apple Intelligence cited a report from the news organization claiming that Luigi Mangione—the man arrested for the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson—had shot himself.

Clarivate, the parent company of ProQuest and its Ebook Central platform, on February 18 announced the launch of a new subscription-based content access strategy for ebooks and digital collections. As part of the strategy, Clarivate will be phasing out the option for libraries to purchase one-time perpetual licenses for its ebooks and digital collections in 2025, including single-title purchases, upgrades, and evidence-based and demand-driven acquisitions.

Philanthropic foundation Carnegie Corporation of New York on December 9 announced a new $5 million pool of grant funding available for public libraries nationwide. The new initiative—Libraries as Pillars of Education and Democracy—“will help public libraries deliver critical services that promote socioeconomic mobility, civic participation, and social belonging,” according to an announcement.
