Photo by Tom Pidgeon/Getty Images Over the years, several Yankees team have gotten criticism from some sets of the fandom for being “too reliant on home runs” for fears that may come back to haunt them in the playoffs. While there is legitimate analysis that disputes that as a worry, it’s a thought that arises every so often. For this year’s team, Monday night’s win over Royals will probably cause some of those claims again.

As observers of this year’s Yankee team so far, I think we’re all acutely aware of the havoc that injuries can cause on a pitching staff. Three of the planned rotation members at the start of spring training have already missed time and/or aren’t coming back anytime soon. One of the replacements for those three is also now on the injured list. It’s been a mess. On this day 25 years ago, the Yankees were also dealing with pitching issues, although in that case, it was just one pitcher on the IL.

Now, they’ll have a chance to sweep a playoff team from last year later today in the series finale.

In theory, they were then set to face some stiffer competition when they hosted Wake Forest. However, the bats were still firing in quite an impressive way. Over the three games, Carolina scored 31 runs on their way to a sweep of the Demon Deacons. Let’s look back at how everything played out.

Photo by Rich Schultz/Getty Images Baseball season is now fully underway. In the major leagues, the Yankees have played basically two weeks worth of games, but even below that, we’re really starting to get into the swing of things. The minor league season is going for a lot of teams, which also means the return of minor league promotions. Every year, minor league teams around the country bust out interesting themed nights or giveaways to try and attract people to the ballpark.
