Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images The most intriguing storyline to watch in the Yankees’ series finale against the Athletics on Sunday was how Luis Severino would match up against the Bombers. While Severino was on the crosstown rival Mets last year, he didn’t end up facing the Yankees in any of those two teams meetings last year, meaning this would be his first career start against the team that signed him way back in 2011. This probably wasn’t how he envisioned things going down.

Photo by New York Yankees/Getty Images Yesterday saw the Yankees get some less-than-stellar pitching at the start, rally to overcome that, only to get some less than stellar pitching at the end, dropping the second game of their series against the Athletics. Thanks to that, today’s series finale will now be a rubber match at Sutter Health Field.

Photo by Bryan Kennedy/MLB Photos via Getty Images Four runs is hardly an insurmountable deficit, but falling behind by that amount in the first three innings is never a good thing. Even beyond the mere fact that the record of teams that fall behind by four isn’t going to be great, doing so probably means your pitcher had a bad day and will come out early or will allow more runs. Then maybe you’re using lesser arms in the bullpen, and etc, etc.

Photo by Scott Marshall/Getty Images Last night, the Yankees played their first game in the Athletics’ temporary home in West Sacramento, and it became the domain of Jasson Domínguez. “The Martian” became the youngest ever Yankee to hit three home runs in a game, surpassing 1937 Joe DiMaggio and leading the Bombers to a 10-2 win. Today, Jasson and the Yankees will look to follow that up in game two in Sacramento.

Photo by: Circa Images/GHI/Universal History Archive/Universal Images Group via Getty Images Earlier this week, the Yankees pulled off the feat of scoring 10 runs in an inning. Austin Wells’ grand slam capped off the massive frame that began with the Yankees losing and ended with them winning a bit of a laugher. Considering that in general, the average runs per game a team scores is under 10, doing that in one inning alone will lead to wins most of the time.
