    A state Superior Court judge rejected a request Tuesday to dismiss charges against the man accused of hitting and killing hockey star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother last year as the pair bicycled in Salem County. Prosecutors say Sean M. Higgins, 44, of Pilesgrove, was intoxicated when he hit Gaudreau, 31, and Matthew R. Gaudreau, 29, as the men biked along a rural road on the evening of Aug. 29, 2024. The brothers died at the scene.

    A Gloucester County man faces a criminal trial over a 2023 incident in which police say he stormed into a man’s house, threatened the victim with a knife, then repeatedly stabbed a dog that had bitten his son. Anthony M. Botte, 44, of South Harrison Township, was indicted on five counts last year, including second-degree burglary, third-degree counts of aggravated assault, terroristic threats and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree cruelty to animals.

    A family has identified two young sisters killed when a massive fire devastated a Cumberland County neighborhood last week. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, an official said Monday. Six residences were destroyed and nearly two dozen people displaced when the blaze broke out Wednesday night on the 300 block of South 4th Street in Millville. The bodies of the two children were recovered from the rubble on Thursday.

    A Gloucester County borough councilman seen on video berating a police officer during a January traffic stop has not filed to run for a new term in office, an official confirmed. Paulsboro Councilman Theodore D. Holloway II was stopped for allegedly running a stop sign on Jan. 4 in the borough, and police body camera video of the incident showed him yelling at the officer, swearing and calling the officer’s chief.

Six homes were destroyed and 23 people displaced in a blaze that began late Wednesday on the 300 block of South 4th Street in Millville. Fesponders spent much of Thursday searching the rubble for the two children.
