Playoff matchups set: 5 local squads in, 4 to host first-round games

Area football fans won’t have to do much traveling for the opening round of the playoffs. The Ohio High School Athletic Association released its final regular-season computer rankings Saturday, officially confirming that five local teams will be playing playoff football. Four of those squads will be hosting first-round games Friday night. The top 16 teams in each region earned playoff berths, with the top eight hosting in the first round.

According to the recruiting website Rivals.com, the number-one high school football senior in the country resides in Bellefontaine. On Monday, the site announced that it has elevated BHS senior quarterback Tavien St. Clair to the top spot in its 2025 individual rankings. A video of Chieftain head coach Jason Brown informing St. Clair and the rest of the squad of the news in the team’s locker room was posted to Rivals’ X account.

Indian Lake’s softball team clinched its second straight outright Central Buckeye Conference Mad River division championship Wednesday with a 3-1 victory over visiting Springfield Shawnee. The Lakers are now 19-2 overall and 13-2 in the CBC. They hold a three-game lead over second-place Shawnee with one league game remaining. “This team is one of the most talented softball teams from top to bottom that I have ever coached,” said second-year Laker head coach John Stahl.

West Liberty-Salem’s track and field teams both placed first in the six-team Ohio Heritage Conference North division meet Tuesday at WL-S. The WL-S girls dominated their meet, scoring 148 points. Fairbanks was second with 80, Mechanicsburg was third with 62, Triad took fourth with 54, Northeastern was fifth with 29 and West Jefferson finished seventh with seven points. Junior Delaney Jones led the Lady Tigers by winning the long jump (15-6) and the 100 (12.23).

Bellefontaine’s girls basketball team took gut punch after gut punch here Tuesday in a triple overtime Division II sectional final against Thurgood Marshall. In the end, the ninth-seeded Chiefs simply ran out of gas — and nearly ran out of players — in a 72-64 loss to the sixth-seeded Cougars at Tecumseh High School. “I couldn’t be more proud of these girls,” said Bellefontaine head coach Meghan Ashcraft. “To go through what they did and show the grit they did, I couldn’t ask for anymore of them.
