Firefighters trying to rescue man trapped in hole on Sunset Cliffs

Rescuers have been working for hours to free a man trapped in a hole along the side of a cliff in Sunset Cliffs near Orchard and Cable streets, fire officials said Friday. San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded to a report of a person trapped in a hole at about 3:40 p.m. Thursday, according to fire officials. The man is not injured but is trapped from the waist down inside a crevasse along the cliff.
As storm hits San Diego, here comes the holiday travel rush

The holiday travel rush is upon us. The Auto Club of Southern California (AAA) is forecasting that from Saturday through Jan.1, nearly 10 million people in Southern California will travel 50 miles or more — a slight increase from last year. "The reason why we’re anticipating a record number of travelers this holiday season is because we’ve seen growth in travel all year long," said Doug Shupe, spokesperson for the Auto Club of Southern California.

Alaska Airlines flight attendants crowded San Diego International Airport's terminal two as local union leaders said negotiations on a new contract have basically fallen apart. The Association of Flight Attendants also announced members will vote next month on whether to authorize a strike against Alaska Airlines. Alaska Airlines officials said they have been negotiating with the Association of Flight Attendants since September of 2022 and have come to some tentative agreements.
Judge's ruling clears way for Midway Rising redevelopment project

A San Diego County Superior Court judge's ruling ended the final challenge to the voter-approved Measure C, which allows for taller buildings in the Midway District. Measure C, which San Diego voters approved in 2022, eliminated the Midway District's 30-foot coastal height limit. However, the measure had faced legal challenges. Late last week, Superior Court Judge Katherine Bacal rejected the last of the challenges.
Rady Children's Hospital's emergency room busy ahead of the holidays

Since October, cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) have been rising and officials with Rady Children's Hospital are seeing more kids coming in with respiratory illnesses. "We’re really busy — there’s no doubt about it," said Dr. John Bradley, medical director for infectious diseases at Rady. "RSV is here, like gangbusters."Bradley said the hospital is used to ramping up during respiratory virus season in the winter and are managing.
A closer look at San Diego's Housing Action Package 2.0

The San Diego City Council approved Mayor Todd Gloria's wide-ranging Housing Action Package 2.0 on Tuesday. The plan includes a number of provisions aimed at boosting housing construction and increasing the amount of affordable housing in the city. We take a closer look at what's included. Temporary PedWest closure comes at terrible time for businesses that rely on cross-border customers

Saturday marked the beginning of the temporary closure of the pedestrian border crossing PedWest near San Ysidro. Just blocks away from the U.S.-Mexico border, Carolin Shoes owner Olivia Campos said the impact was felt right away. "This Saturday and Sunday, we are like waiting for customers and we don't see customers," Campos said. Customs and Border Protection officials said they needed to temporarily close PedWest to redirect staff following increasing numbers of migrant crossings.
Federal government makes largest investment in Salton Sea mitigation efforts yet

The Salton Sea is the largest lake in California, but it has been receding. As it dries up, the exposed lake bed creates dust that fills the air. Researchers from UC Riverside have found that the lake’s dust triggers lung inflammation and may have a role in the region's high asthma rates. The state of California has invested hundreds of millions to restore habitats for plants and fish. This week $72 million in federal funding was announced to help that work.
