NEWPORT, Tenn. (WATE) — Traffic on Interstate 40 in Cocke County is being diverted due to flooding and a possible rockslide, the Tennessee Department of Transportation announced. It remains closed as of Thursday morning, TDOT said. Just after 5 p.m. Wednesday, TDOT spokesperson Mark Nagi said that both directions of traffic of I-40 at Exit 451 were closed. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes. The detour routes are I-81 to I-26 and I-81 to I-77, TDOT wrote Thursday afternoon.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The East Tennessee Foundation (ETF) awarded $246,500 in grants to 24 nonprofits supporting women and children in Knox County. ETF gave grants of up to $12,000 to several organizations as part of its Mount Rest Fund. The goal for 2025 was to address community priorities like early childhood education, drivers of health and prevention of adverse childhood experiences, ETF wrote.

ATHENS, Tenn. (WATE) — The Athens City Police Department is seeking information after a fatal crash involving a motorcycle, the city of Athens government said. On Wednesday, ACPD officers responded to a crash at the intersection of Redfern Road and Congress Parkway. One person was pronounced dead on the scene. After investigating, officers found two separate crashes had occurred at the site. The first crash involved a motorcycle and a box truck.
