    In 1892, boosters in Tulare County decided to chop down the General Noble Tree, a 3,200-year-old giant sequoia. Loggers cut the 300-foot-tall old-growth behemoth into segments, then reassembled a 40-foot section of it at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, better known as the Chicago world’s fair.

    When it comes to what remains of Southern California’s night sky, there are two big problems: The darkness on the edge of town isn’t nearly as dark as it used to be, and the edge of town creeps farther out all the time. But drive into the California desert and the stars still shine bright. For less than a tank of gas or a single EV charge, you can rock your world. Just lie down, look up, and tune in to the universe.     In March 1924, Los Angeles geologist and engineer Wayne Loel sketched a simple diagram of a dam that would profoundly alter the Southern California environment for the next century. Loel’s pencil drawing depicts the tapering cross section of an arch dam rising 102 feet out of Malibu Creek, with a separate view showing the dam curving 85 feet across the canyon mouth. In a neat script on the upper right corner of the tracing paper, Loel wrote two words: Rindge Dam.

    Sages through the ages have lauded ants as exemplars of industriousness, persistence and the virtues of collective effort. “Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise,” counsels Proverbs 6:6-8, yet most of us focus on extermination, not inspiration, when we find ourselves in the company of these social insects. Stomping, poisoning, drowning and burning are among the measures people turn to as ant antipathy verges on anti-ant pathology.
