ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. — Longtime Cloudland Head Coach Matt Birchfield has another accolade to add his resume. The Cloudland girls’ basketball coach was one of 21 individuals selected for induction into the Carter County Sports Hall of Fame as part of the 2025 Class during an induction ceremony on May 31. Jessica Pulley-Lunsford and Bob Bennett joined Birchfield as Cloudland inductees this season. Birchfield was inducted as an athlete and a coach.

A trio of state champion performances highlighted the Tuesday performances from Carter County athletes at the TSSAA Track and Field Championships. In the Class AA Girls’ Shot Put, Elizabethton’s Jamira Smalls claimed the state title as the junior recorded a mark of 37-8.75 on her second attempt to claim the title. Lady Cyclones freshman Ava Rogers finished fifth in the event with a mark of 35-6.75.

The Cloudland baseball and softball programs saw the season come to a close in the District 1-A tournaments. The Lady ‘Landers were unable to hold off a late Unaka rally in a 7-6 decision in the final elimination game of the tournament, while the ‘Landers saw a furious rally come up short in a 6-5 elimination game decision to Unaka. Lady ‘Landers 5, Unaka 4In the opening game of the District 1-A tournament, Cloudland battled back from an early 3-0 deficit.

Unaka was unable to rally to extend the season on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Rangers fell 8-6 to Hancock County in the Region 1-A Semifinals at Hancock County. With the loss, Unaka’s season comes to a close. For the first time in program history, Hancock County advanced to the Region 1-A title game as well as the substate round. Hancock County jumped out early with three runs in the bottom of the first. Unaka loaded the bases in the top of the second but was unable to plate a run.

Elizabethton saw the season come to a close on Saturday. The Cyclones came up short in the Region 1-3A Championship game as they lost 6-0 to Greeneville. In the runner-up contest, Elizabethton was unable to battle back from an early deficit as they fell 6-4 to Unicoi County. Greeneville 6, Cyclones 0In the championship game, it was every bit the heavyweight battle that was expected.
