Cairns NBL player Jackson Makoi has been charged in relation to an alleged domestic violence assault from 2023, with the 24-year-old arrested on Saturday evening. The Taipans guard was due to face the Sydney Kings on Sunday but instead faced Parramatta Local Court, charged with common assault and intentionally choking a person with recklessness. Makoi was granted bail with the matter to return to court for mention on January 15.

Cairns Taipans guard Jackson Makoi faces an uncertain NBL future after being arrested. The NBL released a statement on Sunday morning confirming Makoi was involved in an incident and the matter is now in the hands of the NSW police and Basketball Australia’s Integrity Unit. Makoi, who played for South Sudan at last year’s Paris Olympics, has averaged 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 11 games.
