A cool thing about Mei Semones is that she operates in a league of her own. You may find another musician with parallel ambitions, sure, but the likelihood of you finding an album that sounds like Animaru is paper-thin. This is music that ignores genre lines and embraces the margins of conventionality. But Semones’ history with the craft spans more than a decade. In high school in Ann Arbor, she was a jazz guitarist tinkering in neo-soul bands.

It’s been a year since we last heard from Erika de Casier, the Portugal-born, Copenhagen-bred singer and producer. Her 2024 album Still was a love letter to the 2000s—to the prime days of Aaliyah, Mýa, and mid-career Janet Jackson, where her singing was very head-register, vibrating, and close-mic’d. So much of it was light and beautiful, sweetly and sensually entrenched in the not-so-yesterday flourishes of Black club music and Afrofuturism.

Two years ago, I ranked every Pink Floyd album from worst to best. It wasn’t a hard task, as it’s clear that the band has about seven, maybe eight average to below-average records. Obscured by Clouds, their final album before The Dark Side of the Moon, is the blurred line between good and great, revealing an impressive run of releases spanning from Dark Side through The Wall. Oh, and The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is in there, too.

We’re nearing the finish line! After tonight, just one episode of Saturday Night Live’s 50th season remains. For a beloved, oft-criticized show like SNL, Lorne Michaels and co. have done a bang-up job making this season as ordinary as possible. There have been great episodes, of course, but the show celebrating its golden jubilee without any big-time returns has left a sour taste in my mouth.

UK post-rock outfit Maruja have shared the news that many of us have been waiting for: Their debut album is coming this year. Pain to Power will arrive September 12 via Music For Nations, and it was produced by Samuel W Jones, whom the band tapped for their first three EPs. In 2024, we named Maruja’s Connla’s Well EP as one of the best of the year.

Gina Birch, Raincoats co-founder and singer-songwriter, has announced Trouble, her impending second album. The LP arrives July 11 via Third Man Records, its title calling to mind the “mini revolutions that have occurred” in Birch’s life. “Not following the usual paths, falling down holes, making the same mistakes over and over, trouble of being a young woman at a time our options were generally secretary, mother or sex worker,” she continues.

Ty Segall has announced LA Recovers, a benefit disc compiled in an effort to raise funds for Los Angeles fire relief and recovery. The album will include exclusive, previously unreleased cover songs performed by Segall, King Tuff, Jack Name, Redd Kross, Shannon Lay, Shannon & The Clams, and many more. “The idea of doing a comp turned into friends covering each other and we thought that would be a perfect thing to do for some L.A. fire relief charity fundraising,” Segall said in a press release.
