Over the March 22 weekend, it was reported that the China Ship Scientific Research Centre (CSSRC) and its affiliated State Key Laboratory of Deep-sea Manned Vehicles have developed a ship able to cut cable lines at depths of up to 4,000 meters (13,123 feet).

Once upon a time, several years ago, my wife and I went on a Hawaiian honeymoon. To be honest, it was amazing. While we were there and I was half an ocean from any real stress or worry, I found myself transformed. I ceased to be the uptight, worrying, anxious individual that I had become by that point. I was calm, easygoing and absolutely unwilling to take anything too seriously. I was a different man for a few days. “Maui Matt” was the name my wife gave me, and it stuck.

I have reached the age when my computer wallpaper changes, and I really have no idea how or when it happens. Occasionally, I just notice that there is a different picture staring back at me when I sit down to check my morning emails. Today, an incredible photo of a city riverfront greeted me. A marina filled with boats, a waterslide carnival scene, and a modern skyline filled with skyscrapers, all connected by an arched bridge spanning the waterway – it was all there.

The two most common times I typically compose this column are Monday evenings and Saturday mornings. In a given week, it is nearly always at one of those two times when I sit down to have a one-sided conversation with each of you. The Monday evening columns generally reflect my fatigue – my frustrations with humanity come to the surface in these writings more frequently than in my Saturday columns, when the coffee is fresh in my veins and my outlook a bit more positive.

I have a friend who fairly frequently suggests a book for me to read. He and I share several common interests related to health and self-improvement, so most generally if he enjoys a book, I’ll enjoy it, too. I really enjoy this exchange (it’s not really an exchange: he finds the books and I read them, meaning I never really reciprocate in terms of giving him good reading ideas).

What a tribute to an excellent storyteller. @craigmelvin said @joefryer "is one of those journalists who figured out how to use his platform and megaphone for good." That's what I seek in my own career. We journalists have a huge privilege. Cheers to those who make it count.
