I was speaking with a couple of Stanberry friends, a husband and wife who I have known for years, last week. I ran into them at the junior high track meet, where we were all gathered to watch our kids compete in several of the meet’s final events. They’re readers of our newspaper, and when I see this man, especially, we frequently discuss something recent I have written in this column.

One evening this past week, I was able to spend time with some close friends, one of whom called me because her mother – a longtime member of my church family – was nearing her final moments here on earth. I’ll not share names, not because it wouldn’t delight me to speak with you about some of the wonderful people I have had the privilege of knowing in life, but because some experiences are personal, and should remain so for the sake of those whose feelings are at stake.

Our goal in launching the Economic Security and Technology Department’s Back & Forth series is to promote debate about ideas that do not get adequate attention in Washington policy circles. As a bipartisan community of scholars, our expectation is that Back & Forth will model the art of thoughtful disagreement about unexplored solutions to our biggest challenges on economic security and technology. That, in our opinion, is the crying need of democratic governance in polarized times.

It will sound a little strange to you when yo read this, but it’s the truth: I think I’m pretty good at sorting people. Now that’s not a judgy remark; I am not boasting about my ability to divide people or separate them into piles of race, color, creed or any other real profile or hierarchy.

An autopsy is a procedure performed following one’s death, the purpose of which is to discover either a cause of death or the extent of whatever illness or abnormality from which an individual suffered at the time of the time of said death. That’s the literal definition. Sometimes today, though, we speak figuratively about an autopsy or postmortem being performed when an idea, initiative, action or even a relationship fails.

Powerful story from my teammates @Dan_Grossman and @snadshots from the damage from #HurricaneIan ...

What a tribute to an excellent storyteller. @craigmelvin said @joefryer "is one of those journalists who figured out how to use his platform and megaphone for good." That's what I seek in my own career. We journalists have a huge privilege. Cheers to those who make it count.

Congratulations to @NBCNews' @joefryer for winning @nlgja's Journalist of the Year award! Check out this video as his friends and colleagues pay tribute to him. https://t.co/wxorcoYbk0
