CRYSTAL RIVER — The Citrus girls' tennis team went undefeated Wednesday on the first day of the District 2A-7 Tournament at Crystal River High School and added enough victories on Thursday to claim the team championship. The Hurricanes finished with 23 points to outlast Gulf Coast 8 Conference rival Hernando, which finished with 21 points. "We didn't know what to expect coming in, playing these Pasco teams that we've never seen before," Citrus head coach Katie Hughes said.

MOUNT DORA — The past two seasons, Mary Summers of Seven Rivers Christian has qualified for the state track & field meet in a pair of events. This season, the eighth-grade distance running phenom has added a third race to her postseason slate. Summers claimed District 1A-7 titles in the 800-, 1,600-, and 3,200-meter runs Wednesday at Mount Dora Christian Academy, to automatically qualify for regionals on May 3 in all three events.

DUNNELLON — A seventh inning rally fell a run short for the Citrus baseball team Monday night, in a season-ending 3-2 District 4A-5 semifinal loss to Dunnellon. The Hurricanes (10-16) trailed 3-0 entering the seventh and plated a pair of runs before Tigers' pitcher Mark Pastorella recorded his 10th strikeout of the night for the complete game victory. "They've battled all year. They've never counted themselves out," Citrus assistant coach Mike Wilburn said.

LAKELAND — The FHSAA Class 2A Boys' State Weightlifting Championships nearly started in disaster for Logan Billick. But by the end of the day, the Crystal River senior had become the first state champion for the Pirates since 2004. Billick claimed the Class 2A traditional state title at 129 pounds April 11 at the RP Funding Center after finishing third in the Olympic division earlier in the day. "It's awesome. It just shows how hard we work. Not only me, but as a team," Billick said.
