The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been updating rules pertaining to companies fielding autonomous vehicles that lack traditional controls (e.g. steering wheels and pedals). Last week, the U.S. Department of Transportation issued a letter informing companies that it would be processing exemptions more quickly so that they can put more driverless cars on public roads.

Smart is rumored to be taking another whack at building a roadster and its executives have weighed in on the matter. From the sound of things, the next incarnation of the convertible would probably be all-electric. While Smart’s initial focus was on building small, relatively affordable vehicles that used internal combustion, it has pivoted exclusively to all-electric models since becoming a joint venture between Germany’s Mercedes-Benz AG and the Chinese Zhejiang Geely Holding Group in 2019.

While World War II temporarily stalled automotive production so factories could supply the various armies, basic pre-war cars that were already popular would find themselves back on the menu once the fighting was done. In Europe, these were followed by models like the Volkswagen Beetle and Citroën 2CV. These were small, no-frills economy cars designed during wartime and built during the reconstruction phase.

On Wednesday, Donald Trump announced his endorsement of a US-China trade deal negotiated in London. The arrangement would reportedly allow the United States access to rare earth minerals and magnets necessary for automotive production while still raising tariffs on Beijing to 55 percent. While those tariffs admittedly seem quite high, the White House asserted that they’re a massive decline from the figures both nations were throwing around early in negotiations that surpassed 100 percent.
