This scheme has been instrumental in combatting fuel poverty and climate change in tandem and if we are to maximise success moving forward, it would be prudent to reflect on what works best, and the pitfalls to avoid. Previous waves have taught us that a successful bid does not necessarily equate to a successful project, with several failing to get off the ground or deliver the desired outputs.

As we have seen time and time again, the true strength of local government is demonstrated in our response to crises when the convening and co-ordinating role of councils allows them to step into action and step up on behalf of those who require support. We saw it during the pandemic, we see it when there are extreme weather events and we saw it again in relation to this summer's riots.

As I near the end of my term as Solace president, it is a time for reflection on what has been an exciting and yet challenging two years for the sector. 2024 in particular has been eventful with local and national elections, culminating in a change of government this summer. This has inevitably brought about much uncertainty across numerous horizons. Change can be intimidating, but it also presents opportunities.
