There was plenty of movement in the rankings this weekend, with some byes throwing in an extra dimension just to make it difficult. Hawthorn continued their slide with questions being asked if it’s a long-term or temporary slump, while the Saints returned to the winners list after the Demons couldn’t kick straight – and the “rabble” that is the Swans this year has nearly hit rock bottom. The Cats lead the pack coming for the Magpies, who just may be improving each week.

With his decades of playing, coaching and commentating experience, Phil Gould was left confused, scratching his head at just how Queensland could possibly come back from the Origin game one humbling at the hands of NSW. The margin may only have been 12 points, but watching it may as well have been 50. “I think what they’ve achieved is shattering Queensland. I think Queensland are really going to have some nightmares over that game,” Gould said on Nine.

Kalyn Ponga may well be playing for his state career when he takes the field in tonight’s State of Origin series opener. Here’s a stat that hardly seems fitting of a player of Nathan Cleary’s talent. The NSW halfback has won just six out of the 14 State of Origin matches that he has played in, since making his debut back in 2018 (42%). In addition, he has just 92 Origin points, which averages around 6.5 per game, which, being the goal kicker, can be achieved in just over three conversions. He has two tries and just five try assists as the key playmaking halfback.

The positioning of the teams after round 10 is so volatile that one win or loss can mean a jump or fall several places either up or down. There are no more winless sides in the competition thanks to West Coast’s victory against St Kilda. While Melbourne have managed to put together some winning form after a horror start, and Damien Hardwick’s Suns are proving more and more every week that they are the real deal.
