Casteen III, an English professor who spent two decades as president of the University of Virginia, raising the institution’s academic profile, increasing its endowment and expanding financial support for students, died March 18 at his home in Keswick, Virginia. He was 81. The cause was pancreatic cancer, said his son John T. Casteen IV. Dr. Casteen was a native Virginian who had three degrees from the commonwealth’s flagship university in Charlottesville.

    John Feinstein, a Washington Post sportswriter who became the best-selling author of more than 40 books, including “A Season on the Brink,” an inside look at volatile Indiana University men’s basketball coach Bob Knight, died March 13 at his brother’s home in McLean, Virginia. He was 68. His brother, Robert Feinstein, confirmed the death but said the cause was not immediately clear. Mr. Feinstein, who joined The Post in 1977 as a night police reporter, soon distinguished himself on the sports beat.
