John T. Casteen III, an English professor who spent two decades as president of the University of Virginia, raising the institution’s academic profile, increasing its endowment and expanding financial support for students, died March 18 at his home in Keswick, Virginia. He was 81. The cause was pancreatic cancer, said his son John T. Casteen IV. Dr. Casteen was a native Virginian who had three degrees from the commonwealth’s flagship university in Charlottesville.
