CINCINNATI -- The Cubs have been in first place in the NL Central for most of the season, and the offense has been humming. Still, third base has been a problem for much of 2025, but now it seems that rookie Matt Shaw is fixing the problem after a much-needed stint in the minors. As things stand, the Cubs have a two-game lead in the NL Central.

CBS Sports design We have myriad traditions in baseball and one of the many is using Memorial Day as a tentpole. There's still plenty of time for teams that have been good so far to fall apart and also tons of time for a disappointing team to get hot and do something like win 15 of 20 to thrust themselves into contention. For the most part, though, we have gotten a decent glimpse of what is to come by Memorial Day.

I'm heading out to mow the lawn now with some seeds ... ORIGINAL flavor only https://t.co/502mQYcN8l

so in 2021, when the Orioles were losing 110 games (again), you were sitting there saying, "yeah, but just wait until 2025 when our two best pitchers will be Zach Eflin and a dude who can't consistently stay healthy. Plus, the lineup stinks. Then it will have all been worth it!"

@CBSSportsMLB The thing about these articles that bash Elias for not trading for more arms is that they oddly ignore the fact that the lineup stinks. Or the fact that we have our two best SPs on IL. It reeks of casual observance from someone who doesn’t actually know what is going on.

Orioles fans, you deserve better https://t.co/Y8T3bi0UTc
