With the exception of teams not ready and those under the XINSURANCE sponsorship banner, the Mod V class will begin its season next weekend at Thunder On Cocoa Beach in Cocoa Beach, Fla. What’s more, the Mod V team owners, who discussed the current issues facing the sport and voted on a revised schedule Wednesday evening, will stick with the five-race American Power Boat Association/Powerboat P1-produced national-points series of races this season.

I arrived in town a day early so I could hang out with Dave Scott, a longtime friend I came to know through his offshore racing and Lake of the Ozarks Shootout exploits, at his waterfront home.

At one point or another in the past several weeks, each side involved with offshore racing’s current division accuse the other of lying. And while I have neither the desire nor the time to run down every accusation—a fool’s errand to be sure—I can trace the flashpoint in the conflict back to a closed-door meeting during the 2024 Midwest Challenge in Sheboygan, Wis. None of the Pro Class 1 teams will compete at next weekend’s offshore racing season-opener in Cocoa Beach, Fla.
