Rutger McGroarty, Owen Pickering and other top Penguins prospects made strides. Elsewhere, there were other success stories for the organization, too, such as the stunning push Harrison Brunicke made for an NHL job back in the fall and the emergence of Avery Hayes and Finn Harding, two possible diamonds in the rough.

May 5—The Penguins hold the 11th overall pick in the 2025 NHL draft after the Ping-Pong balls didn't bounce their way during the league's annual draft lottery Monday night. Pittsburgh, which finished with the NHL's ninth-worst record, had a 5% chance of landing the No. 1 pick and could have moved into the top three based on the lottery results. But the New York Islanders won the first lottery draw and scored the No. 1 pick. The Utah Hockey Club won the second draw and moved up to pick No. 4.
