STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — It all started with a vision. When Penn State alumnus and billionaire Terry Pegula approached coach Guy Gadowsky, who would soon be given the reins to Penn State’s men’s hockey team as it transitioned from a club team to a varsity program, he outlined a clear goal. Pegula wanted to bring successful college hockey to Happy Valley, creating a place where Pennsylvania kids could grow up, go to Penn State and ultimately play in the NHL.

Former Penguins general manager Ray Shero, who oversaw the team’s run to the Stanley Cup in 2009, has died, the NHL announced on Wednesday. Shero was 62. Shero worked in the NHL for more than three decades and he spent time with five teams, most recently the Minnesota Wild. The Minnesota native was also actively involved with USA Hockey and was a member of its national team advisory board. The hockey lifer reached the pinnacle of professional hockey here in Pittsburgh.
