    For the past quarter of a century and dating back to high school, Derek Mandell and Ryan Matienzo have pushed each other to become two of the island’s fastest distance runners. And during Guam Running Club’s Pre-Memorial Day Run Saturday, a grueling 13.8-mile race, Mandell defeated his arch rival by more than 2 minutes. Mandell, the overall fastest runner, crossed the finish line in 1 hour, 28 minutes, 20 seconds. Matienzo, who delivered a second-place performance, finished in 1:30:31.

    When Guam High School and St. John’s School met during the Interscholastic Girls High School Football League regular season, the Panthers defeated the Knights 1-0. But in Friday’s quarterfinal playoff game, where the two teams squared off at John F. Kennedy High School’s Ramsey Field, the Knights delivered sweet revenge on the Panthers, sending Guam High packing 3-1, in a penalty kick shootout. “This team, we just wanted it so bad,” said Knights goalkeeper Saya Green.
