Last week, we visited the newly refurbished Rutland & Derby in Leicester. This May marks 15 years since Sam Hagger and the Beautiful Pubs team took it on, and what a stunning job they’ve done in evolving this city centre pub into an impressively stylish space. It’s a full refurbishment, featuring a sophisticated colour scheme, more drinking areas, completely refreshed loos (they really are impressive), lots of leather and stunning glass lights throughout.

Last Friday, we embarked on a marathon 200-mile food tour through Derbyshire, and our second stop was at 100-year-old Owen Taylor & Sons Butchers in the suburban village of Leabrooks. This family-run butchery has been serving the community for over a century and stands out as one of the region’s most entrepreneurial food businesses.

Recently, we had the pleasure of returning to The Griffin Inn in Swithland for an evening meal. Set in the heart of Leicestershire, this pub – run by former England cricketers Stuart Broad and Harry Gurney in partnership with Everards – has evolved into a sophisticated dining destination thanks to a recent no-expense-spared refurb. We chose the flat iron steak. Cooked to perfection at medium-rare, it was juicy and bursting with flavour.

Tucked away off the A606 between Melton Mowbray and Oakham, Northfield Farm Shop & Butchery is the epitome of a hidden gem. If you don’t know it’s there, you’ll drive right past — but missing it would be a foodie crime! With its outstanding quality, it’s no surprise the late Clarissa Dickson Wright counted it among her favourite producers. We visited Northfield Farm yesterday to drop off some 2025 Great Food Club Handbooks and were reminded once again why this place is so special.

If I'd have been outside at that moment, there's a fair chance I might have heard that roar emanating from Sunderland - just an incredible moment. Feel for Coventry, though, boy have they had some heartbreak in these last few seasons!

I wish the guy good luck, but this does scream "sacked by Christmas!" Hope I'm proved wrong

Sometimes football just comes down to luck and Orient certainly got a large slice here - possibly the worst offside decision I've seen all season!
