The New York Red Bulls will be California dreamin’ as they head out west for their second-ever appearance in the MLS Cup against the Los Angeles Galaxy. It couldn’t get any more storybook than this, with a classic New York vs. LA, East vs. West matchup to decide the MLS champion. An injury-ridden second half of the season caused New York to struggle to find their footing, earning more ties than wins and suffering more losses than the club expected.

“Why can’t we?” The infamous question New York Red Bulls captain Emil Forsberg asked after a tough loss at home to the Columbus Crew and just before the club’s playoff run began. Fast forward over a month later and the Red Bulls became the Eastern Conference Champions on their way to the MLS Cup. No Lionel Messi and Co. with Inter Miami, no defending champions in the Columbus Crew, and no defending Supporters’ Shield winners in FC Cincinnati, but the seventh-seeded New York Red Bulls.

New York City officially runs red. The New York Red Bulls made a statement in the Eastern Conference Final of the 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs with a 2-0 win over New York City FC. The first-ever playoff New York Derby glowed red from start to finish. NYCFC dominated in the stat game, holding close to 65 percent of the possession and 25 shots (six shots on goal) as opposed to the Red Bulls’ eight shots and six shots (three shots on goal).

The New York Red Bulls pulled off the upset and snatched game one on the road against the second-seeded Columbus Crew. The 1-0 win put New York ahead in the best-of-three series of the 2024 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. After just a week since heartbreakingly losing to Columbus on Decision Day, the Red Bulls got their revenge. Head coach Sandro Schwarz spoke briefly about the match.
