A new study from the University of Cambridge is making the creepy claim that snakes and lizards are making their way into the UK on imported olive trees. While few gardeners can say they have found a salamander in their garden centre shopping basket, imported insect pests (which constituted more than 80per cent of the pests cited in the study), transported from overseas on cut flowers and potted plants, do have the potential to harm nature.

Bedding plants are falling out of fashion because of their unsustainability, says the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). The colourful annuals have to be replanted each season, which means they have a short shelf life. Bedding was the mainstay of British gardens from the 19th century until the 1970s, and begonias, busy Lizzies and lobelias are still colourful features in many gardens.
