In "How Civil Wars Start," Barbara F. Walter identifies the two biggest risk factors for civil war as: (1) the devolution of institutions into semi-democracy, and (2) the emergence of identity-based factions such as Christian nationalism. In Utah, we already live in a dominant-party system. For decades, our politics have been controlled by a veto-proof, Republican supermajority. We have no real check against the Legislature within the executive.

In the recent article, " Shurtleff, Swallow and now Reyes. Why so much Utah A.G. turmoil? Is there a solution?," Robert Gehrke centered the issue of integrity in the A.G.'s office on the problem of oversight and the possibility of switching to an appointment-based system. But there is a third option: publicly fund elections. If not for every government office, then at least for the top law enforcement position in Utah.

Reading contemporary missions literature, one encounters a diversity of approaches and philosophies to cross-cultural ministry. Such diversity didn’t arise in a vacuum. These are developments that emerged from various emphases we can trace from the previous 200 years of Western missions engagement. In this article, I’ll sketch an overview of modern missions history by highlighting three distinct eras. They’ve produced different emphases or trajectories that continue today in Western missiology.
