AbstractBoard, card or video games have been played by virtually every individual in the world. Games are popular because they are intuitive and fun. These distinctive qualities of games also make them ideal for studying the mind. By being intuitive, games provide a unique vantage point for understanding the inductive biases that support behaviour in more complex, ecological settings than traditional laboratory experiments.

It was all over Twitter for a while, as you may remember. A low-ranking engineer at Google, Blake Lemoine, had released a statement expressing his view that Google's latest chatbot, a system called LaMDA, was "sentient."I found myself tracking the ensuing social-media gossip for a couple of days. But aside from the industry politics - Lemoine was soon, and somewhat controversially, fired - the story didn't make a deep impression on me.
