Why did you start climbing? I grew up in Bolton in Lancashire. When I was 13, my parents were getting divorced, and I started going a bit off the rails. Eventually, a physics teacher called Harold Woolley decided to take some of us — delinquents, shall we say — out of school to go climbing. For the first time in my life, I found that I was good at something. I started when I was 15, and by the age of 17, I’d moved to Llanberis in North Wales to continue climbing.

What sparked your interest in travel and adventure? I grew up on a farm in Northern Ireland, a very beautiful part of the world. I was lucky to spend a lot of time outdoors, but it wasn’t until I went to university that I suddenly got this sense of what a big, exciting world it is. That’s when I started planning a trip. I knew I wanted to do something memorable that I would be proud of when I was older, so I bought a bicycle and set off on a long journey that changed the course of my life.
