Sometimes my ideas are good. Other times, bad. Last week, I had an idea: What if I write a piece in which I highlight my favorite player to draft from each of the 32 NFL teams? I sent the idea to my editors, and they said: “Write it … but for the love of the football gods, no more than 2,000 words, because we have other pieces to edit, the readers have other pieces to read, and you have other pieces to write.”I don't know if this is a good or bad idea. But it's an idea.

The first time I ever played fantasy football, which was almost 20 years ago now, it was in a women-only league. OK, technically, I wasn't the one playing in it. That was my girlfriend. But she didn't know anything about football or fantasy football, so she asked me for help, and what was I gonna do: Say no? So I covertly managed her team in the league she had with her best friends, and then the next season, I decided to do the thing right by actually joining a league of my own.

Matthew Freedman provides expert advice and draft strategies for new superflex fantasy football players. There's a lot that's great about fantasy football. The most obvious is that it's about football, which we all know and love. Also, it gives us the opportunity to lord our dominance, intelligence, and sports acumen over our families, friends, work colleagues, and random acquaintances. Beautiful. But maybe what I love most about fantasy football is that it's a game unto itself.

There are a lot of great fantasy football formats out there. Season-long redraft. Best ball. Guillotine Leagues. They're all fantastic. But my personal favorite is probably still dynasty, in part because I like the long-term nature of it. In redraft, best ball, and Guillotine Leagues, if you take a drastic stance on a player and you're right, your boldness benefits you for just one season.

The 2025 NFL draft resides blissfully in the past, and most teams have their rookie minicamps this weekend, so now feels like a good time to submit my first (and definitely way too early) mock draft for 2026. For all our upcoming 2026 NFL draft coverage, be sure to monitor our Fantasy Life NFL Draft Hub as well as the Saturday edition of the Fantasy Life newsletter.
