Troy Kimmel, a UT geography professor and meteorologist, forecasted one inch or less of snow and sleet for the Interstate 35 corridor starting Monday night, with a possible refreezing over Tuesday night. The University said non-essential staff can work from home.

    The Texas legislature will begin its next legislative session in January 2025, with priorities from the governor, lieutenant governor and the Republican Party of Texas at the forefront of the legislative agenda. In the upcoming legislative session, the Texas GOP will hold an 88-62 majority in the Texas House of Representatives and a 20-11 majority in the Texas Senate following the November election. This will allow easy passage along party lines for any bills the party is united behind.

    The University announced in April that it surpassed $1 billion in research funding during the 2023-24 fiscal year. The National Science Foundation released its annual survey on Nov. 25, analyzing funding for universities across the country, in which UT saw an increase in their rankings. The University previously ranked 35 on the list in the last fiscal year. The University rose to 32 on the ranking in the 2023 list released last week, with an increase of $190 million in the last year alone.

    About 50 students and community members gathered outside the UT Systems building during the Board of Regents quarterly meeting to protest the system’s investments in weapons manufacturers supplying Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza. Austin Students for a Democratic Society organized the protest with a coalition of different organizations. Arshia Papari, a student organizer, was the only scheduled speaker to discuss the items on the agenda.

    Over 200 students gathered outside the LBJ School of Public Affairs Tuesday for a “noise demonstration” to protest an event featuring former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. Students and community members met at the LBJ Lawn at 6:30 p.m. for the protest, organized by the Palestine Solidarity Committee. An estimated 20 law enforcement officers were present, including multiple state troopers who arrived about halfway through the demonstration.
