Vacant office buildings arenāt the only solution to the housing crisis. In the 1990s and 2000s, the U.S. built too many malls and retail areas ā right as e-commerce was taking off. Now, a new real estate trend is repurposing those underused malls into affordable housing. Some developers say the trend could create hundreds of thousands of new housing units nationwide.
